Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith were not together as a couple for many years before the Oscars incident.
In an interview with PEOPLE before the release of her upcoming memoir, Worthy, Jada talked openly about her marriage to Will and the controversial moment at the award show. Even though they are not officially divorced, they are not romantically involved.
Jada said, "We're still figuring it out. We've been doing some serious work together. We have a deep love for each other, and we're trying to understand what that means for us."
Regarding the Oscars incident, she thought it was a joke, but she stated that she will support Will no matter what. She said, "I'll be by his side but also let him figure things out for himself."
In a preview of her upcoming NBC Primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Jada shared that she and Will lead separate lives and have been doing so since 2016.
Hoda expressed surprise at this revelation from Jada's book, where she talks in detail about her relationship with Will. Jada clarified that although they are not romantically together, they are not officially divorced on paper. Nevertheless, she considers it a "divorce."
Jada explained that by 2016, they were tired of trying, feeling stuck in their idealized versions of each other. She admitted their relationship was strained.
She made a promise to never let their differences lead to a divorce, but she hasn't been able to keep that promise.
